Lack of sleep has a bad impact on our health and
causes the risk of many diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
Now scientists claim that it can also be destructive to relationships. “Since
more than a third of us get only six hours a night (less than the recommended
seven to nine), we shouldn’t be surprised if our love lives are suffering,” comments
the author, Luisa Dillner.
Ohio State University kept the experiment of more than
forty couples and studies showed that those who slept less than seven hours a
night were more aggressive. The researchers measured their proteins IL-6 and
TNF-alpha. A rise in these can cause diseases such as diabetes. The study found
out that the stress and sleep deprivation combined are more likely to lead to
an increase in markers. “This is the
first study to show the synergistic effects of short sleep and conflict for
inflammation,” said lead author, Dr. Stephanie J Wilson.
Sleep affects the parts of the brain which are
responsible for solving problems. Without that ability, we cannot function as a
full human being. “It is also no coincidence that the dive in relationship
satisfaction in the first year after having a baby comes during a long stretch
of sleep deprivation. It is hard enough to do anything on not much sleep,” analyzes
Luisa Dillner.
